Hungary Women

The Hidegkuti Nándor Stadion in Budapest holds a little over 5,000, small enough that Hungary's women shift games elsewhere when the fixture calls for more room — the Pancho Aréna in Felcsút, or the Illovszky Rudolf Stadion.

The team's first outing came on 9 April 1985, a 1-0 win over West Germany in Siófok, Ibolya Vrábel scoring the only goal under coach Ferenc Tóth. Six years later they went further than they ever have since, reaching the quarter-finals of the 1991 UEFA Women's Euro before Norway ended the run. No World Cup, no Olympics, and a FIFA ranking that peaked at 26th between July 2003 and May 2004.

Fanny Vágó set the benchmark that nobody has approached since: 146 caps, 74 goals. The current squad looks outward rather than at itself — Henrietta Csiszár, the captain, has worn the shirt over 120 times after spells at Inter Milan and Atlético Madrid, while Anna Csiki built a career in the Women's Super League with Tottenham and West Ham and, in 2025, took the first Women's Hungarian Ballon d'Or.

That outward pull runs through the squad: Lilla Turányi at Bayer Leverkusen, Dóra Zeller still playing at FC Köln, Zsanett Kaján drafted into the NWSL by OL Reign after spells in Italy and Turkey. Hungarian women's football exports its players before it exports results.

When there's a game worth 5,000 seats, it's Hidegkuti Nándor in Budapest that gets them.
