Wembley has been a fortress lately.
That shift has a clear starting point. In July 2022 England beat Germany in the final of the UEFA Women's Euro on home soil, the first major trophy won by any senior England team since 1966. Three years later they retained it at Euro 2025, becoming the first senior England side to win a major tournament away from home. Between those two titles came a World Cup final in 2023, lost 1-0 to Spain, and a third-place finish at the 2015 World Cup.
Sarina Wiegman has coached every one of those results since taking charge in 2021. Fara Williams' 172 caps stand as the appearance record, set before the Euro run began.
England's own women's side dates to 1972, when the WFA sent a team to Greenock and won 3-2 in its first match; the Football Association only took over running the women's game in 1993, two decades on.
Wembley remains the anchor, its 90,000 seats filled to a record 87,192 for the Euro 2022 final, though the team still moves around the country for other fixtures — to Bramall Lane, Elland Road, the Stadium of Light.
