«Our Girls»
Three years is a long time for a national side to simply not exist. Iceland's women withdrew from competition in 1984, and the set-up was formally disbanded in 1987; it came back only because players pushed to rebuild it, reappearing between 1992 and 1993.
The nickname Stelpurnar okkar — Our Girls — dates from a documentary filmed during qualifying for the 2009 European Championship, the tournament that gave Iceland their first appearance at a major finals.
Silverware has come in the smaller invitational tournaments rather than in UEFA or FIFA competition proper: runners-up at the Algarve Cup in 2011 and at the SheBelieves Cup in 2022, third at the Algarve Cup in both 2014 and 2016, and outright winners of the Pinatar Cup in 2023, beating the Philippines 5-0 in the final.
Home games are played at Laugardalsvöllur in Reykjavík, which holds 9,522 for football. As of June 2026 the team sits 17th in the world.
