When Botafogo de Patos folded after eleven years without losing a single match on home soil, the town's football simply stopped, and the men who had watched Botafogo dominate the Sertão needed a club to fill that silence. They named the new side Esporte Clube Patos and gave it a badge with Donald Duck on it, a wink at the city's own name — Patos means ducks. Disney's lawyers did not find it funny, and the club redrew the crest with a duck.

The red and white kit was borrowed in spirit from Recife, from Sport and Náutico, and the shirt is still called Alvirrubro for it.

Esporte have never lifted the Paraíba state championship's top division. What they own instead is the second tier, taken four times — 2005, 2013, 2015 and 2018 — and a rivalry with Nacional Atlético Clube, the other club from Patos.

That same year gave the club something new to hold onto: its under-20 side, coached by Fábio Ferreira, beat Confiança de Sapé over two legs for the Paraíba Sub-20 title, winning 1-0 at home before a 1-1 draw away settled it 4-2 on penalties. The title sends the young side into the Copa São Paulo de Futebol Júnior in 2026, alongside the Copa do Brasil and Copa do Nordeste at Sub-20 level.
