FC Lisse

Sportpark Ter Specke sits on the edge of Lisse, a ground built for roughly 4,000 people in a town surrounded by bulb fields. It has been home to a club that only exists because two other clubs stopped competing with each other for the same players and the same Saturday afternoons.

Football in Lisse goes back to 1911, when a local Catholic priest put together the town's first side. What followed was a sequence of foundings and dissolutions: the early club was renamed, then wound up in 1942; RKVV Lisse had been formed in 1921 and survived; Lisser Boys arrived after the war. RKVV Lisse and Lisser Boys tried to merge in 1968 and failed. They tried again thirteen years later and succeeded, and on 17 March 1981 FC Lisse — Fusie Club Lisse, the merger spelled out in the name — began.

The yellow shirts and blue shorts gave the club its other name, De Geelblauwen, though most people in the town say De Lisseraren.

The climbing came in stages, each one on Saturday football: champions of the Zaterdag Hoofdklasse A in 1996–97 and again in 2007–08, then promotion to the Topklasse at the end of the decade, then the Tweede Divisie in 2016–17. That last step did not hold — relegation followed within a season. The title that mattered most recently was the Derde Divisie (Saturday) in 2021–22, which sent the club back up; by 2023–24 it had come down again.

Ricardo van Rhijn, once a Dutch international and an Ajax academy graduate, signed in 2023 — an arrival that says something about where the club sits in the Dutch game, close enough to the top to attract a name on the way back down.

The fixtures the town waits for are local. VV Noordwijk brings the Bollenstreekderby, named for the bulb region both clubs share, and Rijnsburgse Boys are near enough that the meeting counts for the same reasons.
