Froya Basket

Frøya's fiercest matches are played close to home. Fyllingen Lions sit across the same city. Gimle BBK carries the older grudge — Gimle calls Frøya an arch-rival outright, and the two sides' "byderby" has only sharpened since Gimle beat Frøya to the 2022–23 title.

The basketball existed inside Idrettslaget Frøya, a multi-sport club from Laksevåg, for well over a decade before anyone thought to separate it. That happened on 19 January 2002, and the new club entered the top division that same year as Frøya Ambassadors.

The one championship came a decade later. In the 2011–12 final, Frøya beat Asker Aliens 80–78, with Miilah Kombat taking the finals MVP award — the kind of tight, single-possession finish that gets replayed in Bergen long after the season ends. Eleven years passed before Frøya reached another final, and Gimle closed that one out 3–1.

Home games since 2016 have been played at Frøya Arena on Øvre Fyllingsveien, a parquet-floored hall built to FIBA specifications.

Two MVP seasons either side of the pandemic gave the club its more recent reference points: Devin Gilligan in 2020–21, then Wayne Stewart the year after. Ask around the club longer, though, and the name that keeps coming up is Nikolas Kvåle Skouen, a local product good enough to be shortlisted for Norway's national team player of the year in 2018.
