Gambusinos

Irwin Ávalos is an LNBP All-Star. The club took the identity in 2002, its opening season in the Liga Nacional de Baloncesto Profesional, and by 2003 had already won something that stuck: the Circuito Mexicano de Básquetbol title, beating out no one, with Santos de San Luis losing the final.

Five seasons in, the LNBP chapter closed. In 2007 Gambusinos merged with Barreteros de Zacatecas to form Unión Zacatecas, and the name went quiet. It came back in 2025, stepping into the spot vacated by Plateros de Fresnillo, and the return has been a hard one so far: eleventh in the standings, out of the play-in against Dorados, out of the Copa Value quarterfinals to Astros.

Games against Mineros de Zacatecas still carry the old weight. Fresnillo against the state capital, the Clásico Zacatecano, is the fixture people in the Gimnasio Nico Varela circle on the calendar before anything else — a rivalry that predates the merger, back when Barreteros were the ones across town.

Three seasons in that first spell ended in the playoffs. One title from 2003 is still the only trophy in the cabinet.
