A group of Danube Swabian refugees were living in a displaced persons camp on the edge of Salzburg when they put together a football team and called it Union Sportklub Grödig. It was 1948. The club took the name SV Grödig in 1955.

Two Regionalliga West championships, in 2008 and 2010, opened the door to the Erste Liga, and in 2012/13, under coach Adi Hütter, the club won that division too and reached the Austrian Bundesliga for the first time.

Grödig finished third in 2013/14, its highest league placing, and reached an Austrian Cup semi-final the following season. Tobias Kainz and Stefan Lainer moved on to Red Bull Salzburg out of that squad and were later capped by Austria, Lainer going on to Bayern Munich. The Peruvian forward Jordan Reyna was the club's top scorer in the Bundesliga in 2014/15, and a Salzburg Cup followed in 2016/17.

None of that survived. Grödig went bankrupt and folded in 2024, leaving the 4,132-capacity Winkelhofer Stadion behind it.
