Macaé is a city built on oil, where the rhythm of life is set by offshore rigs and the tides of the global market. In such a place, football clubs are often fleeting, born from the prosperity of a moment and dissolved when the price of crude drops. Associação Esportiva Independente is one of the few survivors in Macaé, having stuck with the game through decades of boom and bust. The club arrived on the scene on 29 December 1992.

They wear blue, white, and black, earning the nickname 'Tricolor', though locals know them better as the 'Macaé Shark'. They play their home matches at the Estádio Expedicionário , a modest ground holding 5,000 spectators. While the club lacks an official website, relying instead on a Facebook page, they have maintained a presence in the local landscape.

After the national stage faded, the focus shifted inward. The club became a fixture in the Campeonato Macaense, the local amateur league. They also lifted the Taça Macaé in 2015. The club currently plays in Carioca Série C, a level that requires constant effort.
