The midfielder Dedeco, who played for União Central in 2010, had come through Flamengo's youth academy. He is the only player of his kind in the club's story. União Central has produced no graduates for major clubs or the national team, and its own players are known mostly in the lower divisions of Rio de Janeiro.

The club began on 14 April 1986 in the Penha neighbourhood. Its founders were street vendors from the Central do Brasil train station, which is why it is also called União Central da Penha. The nickname Aurianil joins "aur", for gold or yellow, to "anil", for blue. Those are the colours of the striped home shirt, which is worn with yellow shorts and white socks. Away matches are played in all white.

The club's best years came early and outside the professional ranks. In the amateur competitions run by the Rio de Janeiro state football federation (FERJ), it won the Taça Francisco Assis de Lima in 1992, beating EC Lucas in the final. It won it again in 1994, beating EC Dourados. Between the two came the Campeonato do Departamento de Futebol Amador da Capital in 1993. In 1994 it also won the Taça Disciplina.

Its best professional result came in 2000. It finished runner-up in the Campeonato Carioca Série A-3, beaten by Casimiro de Abreu. No professional state title has followed, and the club now plays in the Carioca Série C.

União Central owns no ground. Its headquarters are on Rua Coronel Rogaciano Mendes in Freguesia, on the Ilha do Governador, but home matches are played at rented venues. These include the Estádio José de Alvarenga in Belford Roxo and the Estádio Municipal 25 de Novembro.
