Kiryat Ata never had a basketball derby in the strict sense. The city's football club, Hapoel Kiryat Ata, folded in 1992, so whatever local needle existed disappeared before it could sharpen into anything lasting on the court. What Ironi has instead is a district rivalry with Hapoel Haifa and Maccabi Kiryat Motzkin, clubs it keeps running into in the Haifa area, where proximity does most of the work that history would otherwise do.

The team traces back to 1974, formed by Yaakov Baker after Hapoel Kiryat Ata disbanded, and it spent its first quarter-century as Elitzur Kiryat Ata before switching to Ironi in 2000. In 2017 the name reverted to Elitzur on paper, though the city still knows it as Ironi. Naftali Bentov took over running the club in 1976 and stayed at the helm for years afterward, giving the operation a continuity that outlasted the changes in branding.

Ironi's identity has been built in the Liga Leumit rather than at the top of Israeli basketball. The club won that second-tier title in 2003–04 and again in 2021–22, took the third-tier Liga Artzit in 2010–11, and added a Liga Leumit regular-season crown in 2014–15 and the Liga Leumit Cup in 2015–16. A run to the State Cup semi-finals in 2024 ended against Hapoel Tel Aviv. Sharon Avrahami moved between the two sides of the game here, playing for the club and later coaching it, while Ilan Nannikashvili is remembered locally for the three-pointer that sent the team up through the promotion playoffs in 2008.

Home games are played in front of 1,200 people at Ramaz Hall, a gym-sized venue that keeps the club tied tightly to its own city rather than to any wider stage.
