In the 1997/98 season, a club run for decades out of a boys' grammar school finished fourth in the Turkish Süper Lig, its best league placing ever, and followed it with a run to the Intertoto Cup semi-final. The school whose students and teachers had founded the club on 4 January 1926 under Kemal Halim Gürgen is İstanbul Erkek Lisesi.

The Uzan years ended badly. İstanbulspor was swept up in the same collapse, dropped into the lower leagues and stayed there for years. A foundation called Marmara Spor took the club on in 2006, and businessman Ömer Sarıalioğlu bought it in 2007.
