Leicester Riders

Geno Crandall was named BBL Most Valuable Player (MVP) in 2021 and again in 2022. Crandall took Final MVP and Cup MVP on the way. Before him, Drew Sullivan had done something similar in a different decade. Sullivan won the league MVP award in 2006 and 2013, captained Great Britain, and was central to the 2012–13 treble, when Barry Lamble wore the armband for the club. That season began a run in which the Riders took six BBL Championship titles between 2013 and 2022.

The club began as a student project. Students and lecturers at Loughborough University started it in 1967 as the Loughborough All-Stars. It moved to Leicester in 1981 with Leicester City Bus as its backer, and it took the name Leicester All-Stars and the nickname Riders. The name was shortened to Leicester City Riders in 1986 and to Leicester Riders in 1997.

Success in Europe has been modest. The Riders reached the group stage of the ULEB Cup in 2007–08 and the group stage of the FIBA Europe Cup in 2018–19. Domestically, the rivalry that matters most is with the London Lions, one of the sharpest in British basketball, though it has no derby name. The Nottingham Wildcats, in the East Midlands Derby, and the Derby Trailblazers are the nearer opponents.

Home is the Mattioli Arena, formerly the Morningside Arena, which holds 3,000 for the club's games. In red, black and white, the Riders have played their basketball in Leicester for more than four decades.
