Sheffield Sharks

The Sharks have moved around Sheffield more than most clubs. They spent 2004 to 2006 at Ponds Forge, then 13 years at the English Institute of Sport, and returned to Ponds Forge in 2019. In 2023 they moved into the Canon Medical Arena, formerly the Park Community Arena. It seats 2,500 for basketball and 3,000 in all.

The club began in 1991 as the Sheffield Forgers, a name taken from the city's steel trade. In 1993 the Forgers won the National Basketball League's Division 2. In 1994 the Chrysalis Group bought the club and renamed it the Sharks. The British Basketball League (BBL) had a place free because the Guildford Kings had withdrawn, and Sheffield took it. The move up paid off at once, with the BBL Championship in 1994–95. Two more titles followed, in 1998–99 and 2002–03.

The 1998–99 side had Terrell Myers, who was named league MVP that year. In the 1999 BBL Classic he scored a buzzer-beater against the Manchester Giants.

The Sharks have won three BBL Cups, in 2003–04, 2009–10 and 2010–11, and took the play-off final in 2004 and again in 2016. The most recent trophy is the SLB Cup in 2024–25. Newcastle Eagles games carry the Yorkshire-against-North-East edge, and Leeds Force is the local derby.

The club's best-known export is Chris Finch. He played for Sheffield in the early 1990s and became player-coach in 1997. He later became a head coach in the NBA.
