Stratford has spent the past decade and a half turning an Olympic park into a neighbourhood, and the Copper Box Arena became the address where the borough's basketball team settled that same year. The club itself came from much further out: it started life in 1977 as the Hemel Hempstead Lakers, passed through Hemel Royals and Watford Royals, then spent years as the Milton Keynes Lions before the move to London gave it the name it carries now.

The Copper Box holds 6,000 for basketball, modest against what the club has done in it.

It is the European record that sets London Lions apart from most of the rest of British basketball. They became the first British team to reach the EuroCup playoffs in 2022–23, knocking out Veolia Towers Hamburg, then went further the following season, reaching the semi-finals before Paris Basketball ended the run.

The nearest rivalry now runs against Surrey 89ers, close enough to be billed as a London derby, a newer edge than the old meetings with Guildford Heat from the Milton Keynes years.
