Mikhaylov Academy U20 is the younger of the two, built to keep the National Junior Hockey League slot filled once the senior academy team moved up to the Major Junior Hockey League that year. The lineage runs further back, to a Novomoskovsk club founded in 2018 and folded into the academy's structure a year later, but the U20 side itself exists to do one job: hold the pipeline open under the first team.

That pipeline has already produced something rare for a club this young. Pyotr Andreyanov came through the academy's system and was picked 20th overall by the Columbus Blue Jackets in the 2025 NHL Draft.

Games are played at the Ice Palace, in front of crowds that rarely stretch the venue's roughly 3,000 seats, and the team travels under the nickname Akademiki. Derby days belong to AKM-Junior, the academy's own sister side.

The junior league itself has yet to hand Mikhaylov Academy U20 a title of its own; the TNA Cup and the Governor's Cup of the Tula Region sit with the senior MHL club, not this one.
