The club was set up in December 2013 to enter the Major Hockey League the following season, and in 2015 it tied itself formally to Admiral Vladivostok. Money proved harder to hold onto than a place on the ice: the team pulled out of the league after the 2016/17 season and stayed away until 2019/20, when it returned to Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk.

Daniil Orlov gave the club its clearest measure of how far a Sakhalin junior could travel, taken 110th overall by the New Jersey Devils in 2022, the first player from any Far Eastern youth team to hear his name at the NHL draft. On the ice against Tayfun, Admiral's own junior side, the games carry the weight of the Far Eastern Derby.

What still eludes Sakhalinskie Akuly, through the withdrawal, the return and the coaching changes, is the Kharlamov Cup itself.
