Neither man is remembered for what the under-19s, later redesignated under-20, actually won — the team has never reached a FIFA U-20 World Cup, and its best result in the South American Youth Championship is fourth place. The honours sit elsewhere, in a regional competition where age limits blurred: at the Bolivarian Games, Peru's youth side took gold six times.

The side traces itself to 23 May 1954, when it drew 2-2 with Paraguay in Caracas at the first South American Youth Championship. It plays as La Blanquirroja, in white shirts crossed by a diagonal red stripe, and trains at the Villa Deportiva Nacional in Lima. Yordy Reyna finished as top scorer at the 2013 South American Under-20 Championship with five goals.

Chile and Ecuador supply the fixtures that matter most; in 2019, Peru lost 3-1 to an Ecuador side that went on to win the tournament outright.
