The side did not begin as a feeder side at all. Agrupación Deportiva Plus Ultra was set up in December 1930 as an independent amateur club, and it kept that standing for eighteen years before Real Madrid took it on in 1948. Every one of the six Tercera División titles — the first in 1949, the last in 1968 — was won under the Plus Ultra name. When that club wound up in 1972, Castilla CF was created in its place, and the naming carried on shifting: federation rules in 1991 required reserve teams to carry the parent club's name, so Castilla became Real Madrid B, and the old name only came back for the 2004/05 season.

The high point of the football came in 1983/84, when the team won the Segunda División. Four Segunda División B titles followed, spread across 1991, 2002, 2005 and 2012.

Home is the Estadio Alfredo Di Stéfano, inside the Ciudad Real Madrid training complex, and the kit is white throughout — shirt, shorts, socks. Matches against the reserve team of Atlético Madrid are known as the mini-derby.

Iker Casillas passed through here, as did Raúl González, Vinícius Júnior and Dani Carvajal.
