Sassari

Sassari sits in the north-west of Sardinia. The club began in a school: on April 23, 1960, ten students from the Liceo Azuni high school founded it, playing in white. Its colours changed several times afterwards, to amaranth in 1967, to green and white in 1992 and to the blue and white it wears now in 2005.

The name is a sponsor's leftover. Dinamo Group backed the team, and "Dinamo" outlasted the deal. Officially the club is Polisportiva Dinamo Sassari, and the Banco di Sardegna name is attached to it as well.

For most of its history Sassari was not a club that won trophies. That changed in 2014–15, when it took the treble: the Serie A title, the Coppa Italia and the Supercoppa Italiana in the same season. Travis Diener was named MVP of the 2014 Coppa Italia, and the club has since retired his number 12 shirt. His brother Drake had been the league's most valuable player a year earlier, in 2013–14.

The club did not fade after that. In 2018–19 it won the FIBA Europe Cup and reached the Serie A final, where it finished as runner-up. Its home is the Palasport Roberta Serradimigni, which holds 5,000 for basketball.

The fixture that matters most to the island is the Sardinian Derby against Esperia Cagliari. Olimpia Milano and Virtus Bologna are the bigger names on the mainland, but Cagliari is the opponent from the same island.
