Spartak Pleven

For four seasons, from 1993 to 1997, Spartak Pleven did not exist under its own name. A local oil refinery, Plama Pleven Oils AD, paid for the club and got its name on the shirts: the team played as Plama Pleven. That was the period in which the club won everything it has won. Darin Velikov coached the side to the Bulgarian National Basketball League title in 1995, the same title again in 1996, and the Bulgarian Cup in 1996.

The sponsorship ended when the refinery ran into financial trouble, and in 1997 the team went back to being BC Spartak Pleven. The club itself dates from 1947.

Of that squad, Tsvetan Antov is the player the club kept. He played in the 1995–1996 team alongside Georgi Mladenov, Valentin Vutev and Hrisimir Dimitrov, and later became club president.

In recent years Spartak has played in the Bulgarian NBL and in the European North Basketball League. In the domestic league the matches that draw attention are those against Rilski Sportist, Minyor 2015 and Beroe. Bulgarian media call them derbies, though no single one has a name of its own.

Home games are played at the Balkanstroy Hall, which holds 2,000. The club plays in blue and white, and in Pleven its followers are known as the Blue-Whites.
