St George Willawong

The football played at Willawong belongs to the Serbian Sports Centre that surrounds it. The club runs out of that centre on Camden Road, in a suburb on Brisbane's southern edge, and the ground it plays on carries the same name as the club itself — St George's Park, a thousand places around the pitch.

What the club did in 2024 is the part worth setting out slowly. It won the FQPL 1 Premiers title, the top of the Queensland Premier League 1 season, which put a side from a suburban sports centre at the head of a table it had reached only recently. Two years earlier, in 2022, it had been winning FQPL 3 Metro — the third tier of the same Queensland pyramid. Two promotions and two premierships inside three seasons is a climb that leaves very little time to settle at any level, and the 2024 team did it while Danny Gnjidic was in charge, a former player whose own career ran through Melbourne rather than Queensland.

The founding date sits later in the story than it usually does: 2010. Everything above happened inside the club's first decade and a half, which is a short span for a side to have gone from metropolitan football to the state's senior league and won at both ends of it.

Beyond that, the record thins out quickly. The Queensland league system is where the club has stayed; no graduate has yet made the step into the A-League or the national side that would put the name in front of a wider audience, and no derby has attached itself to the fixture list.
