Eastern Suburbs

Few Brisbane clubs have worn as many names as this one. What plays today at Heath Park in East Brisbane traces to 1922, but for decades afterward it barely sat still: Eastern Suburbs became Easts United in 1959, then Easts-Aston Villa in 1966. In 1972 the club merged with Merton Rovers, and the combined side, Merton-Easts, lasted until September 1980, when it settled on the name it still carries, Eastern Suburbs FC, and the nickname that came with it, the Tigers.

The silverware collected along the way belongs to all those identities in turn. As Merton Rovers the club won the Brisbane top division three times through the 1960s, beating Hollandia-Inala 4-2 in the 1968 final. As Easts-Aston Villa it added the Qantas Cup in 1972. Then, under its current name, it beat Brisbane Lions 3-2 in the 1989 Grand Final to win the Brisbane Premier League. Bill Hayden played for the club before politics took him on to the office of Governor-General of Australia.

Heath Park, the ground on Hilton Street where Eastern Suburbs still play, holds 1,000. The club went on to win the second-tier Premier Division 1 four times, in 1998, 2000, 2003 and 2008. Brisbane Lions have remained the closest rival since that 1989 final, the two clubs separated by a few kilometres of the city, yet the meeting between them has never picked up a name of its own — Brisbane's derby tag belongs to Roar and Strikers instead.
