Brisbane City

Alessandro Rossi took the chair as Brisbane City's first president, and the club he led kept an Italian identity through the years that followed — even when the authorities made that difficult. In the early 1980s, while the club was competing in the National Soccer League, a ban on ethnic club names forced it to play for a time as Brisbane Gladiators.

The name reverted eventually, but the strongest period of that NSL era had already passed by then: City won the NSL Cup in 1977 and again in 1978. Griffin McMaster, Kenny Duagol, Michael Zullo, Adam Sarota and John Coyne all came through the club at various points, a list that says something about a program built to send players on rather than just to hold onto them.

Home games are played at Spencer Park in Newmarket, also known as Imperial Corp Stadium. In 2015, the senior side reached the NPL Queensland grand final and lost it to Olympic FC on penalties after the match finished 3-3, while the club's under-20 side won its own grand final that year, beating SWQ Thunder 4-0.

City compete now in the Queensland state league system, still carrying the Azzurri nickname and the blue and white that trace back to those NSL Cup years, with the state grand final as the target each season returns.
