Moreton City Excelsior

Wolter Park sits in Albany Creek, on Brisbane's northern side, and holds 2,000 — enough for the club's own competitions, though not for the Australian Championship, which pulls the team south to the 5,000-capacity Perry Park instead. The ground has stayed the constant through a history that only recently settled on one name.

For decades the northern suburbs were served by Albany Creek Excelsior, a club working its way up through Brisbane's amateur tiers — champions of Division 3 in 1995, Division 1 North in 1998, Premier Division 2 in 2011. When Football Queensland launched the NPL Queensland in 2012, Albany Creek Excelsior didn't move up as itself. A separate entity, Moreton Bay United, was founded that year to carry the licence, closely tied to the old club but legally its own concern. It reached a Grand Final in 2017, losing to Western Pride, and won the title outright in 2015, beating Brisbane Strikers 2-1. For a decade the two clubs ran in parallel — one in the state league, one still playing lower down as its neighbour.

That arrangement ended in 2023, when Moreton Bay United and Albany Creek Excelsior merged into a single club, Moreton City Excelsior FC. Albany Creek Excelsior didn't disappear; it continued as the new club's reserve side, still turning out at Wolter Park under the name Moreton City has carried since.

The junior sides here have sent players further than most in the district. Robbie Kruse came through Albany Creek Excelsior before Brisbane Roar, Werder Bremen, Hoffenheim and Kashima Antlers took him on, and he scored the winner against Argentina at the 2014 World Cup during 75 caps for the Socceroos; he now plays for New Zealand. Indiah-Paige Riley followed a similar path out of the club's junior ranks to Brisbane Roar and Denmark's Fortuna Hjørring, switching allegiance from the Matildas to New Zealand in 2021.

What the merged club has not yet done is win an NPL Queensland title under its own name — the 2015 championship belongs to Moreton Bay United, a club that no longer exists as such.
