Magic United
Club · Australia · Queensland NPL
Carrara sits inland from the Gold Coast's tourist strip, a suburb built around stadiums and training pitches rather than beaches, and Magic United has run out of it since 2006, working its way up through the lower tiers of Football Queensland rather than starting anywhere near the top.
The climb showed in stages. A Coast League One title in 2014 came first, then the following year Magic United took the Gold Coast Premier League outright, adding the finals series to the regular-season win by beating Broadbeach United on penalties after the final finished 1-1. Promotion into the National Premier Leagues Queensland structure still lay years off. The club returned to winning finals in 2023 and again in 2024, both times in Football Queensland Premier League 2, beating St George Willawong 5-1 and then Holland Park Hawks 3-2.
Those results earned Magic United a place in NPL Queensland for the 2026 season, the top flight in the state and new ground for a club that had spent two decades below it. The season has been difficult from the start, with the team anchored at the bottom of the table and fighting to stay up rather than to make an impression on debut.
Danny Maher, who once served as Magic United's president, now chairs Gold Coast United FC and has described Magic United as having effectively become Gold Coast Knights, a club it now shares training infrastructure with under the same football academy setup. Nothing in the record points to a formal merger or a change of name, and Magic United continues to compete as its own side in NPL Queensland, Gold Coast Knights included among the rivals it now meets in that division alongside clubs such as Brisbane City, Rochedale Rovers and Olympic.
Home games are still played at Magic F.C. Park in Carrara, where the club has always kept its address, blue, yellow and white on the shirts as they were before the move up.
