Ante Milicic, Tony Popovic, Zeljko Kalac, Ned Zelic — the Socceroos who came out of Edensor Park make a longer list than most Australian clubs manage in a century.

The club those players joined was set up in 1958 by Croatian Australians in Sydney, first as Sydney Croatia. It spent the next three decades changing its name under pressure rather than by choice — Metropolitan Adriatic in 1964, South Sydney Croatia in 1968, both the product of anglicisation orders, both abandoned as soon as they could be. In 1993 it became Sydney United, this time to fit the National Soccer League's move to a summer season and its policy against ethnic identifiers in club names. The 58 came back later, and put the founding year where the old name had been.

The ground came with the move west. Surry Hills was left behind in 1980 for Edensor Park, where the club built the Sydney United Sports Centre itself and still holds around 10,000. The seniors won the NSL Cup there in 1987 and the NPL National Championship in 2013 and 2016; the Waratah Cup has come back nine times.

The U20s have twice got within one match of a title and lost both — the 2014 Grand Final to Sutherland Sharks, the 2016 to Blacktown City.

The fixture that empties the calendar is Sydney Olympic, the Greek-founded club from the same city and the same era of migrant football. They call it the Sydney Derby, and it was built on two communities settling the same question on a pitch.
