Tenerife Lenovo

Tenerife has one basketball club of note. The gold-and-black side, the Aurinegros, has carried several names over the years: CB Canarias, La Laguna Tenerife, and now Tenerife Lenovo.

The route to the top division was slow. The club was promoted in 1981 and relegated a year later, went up again in 1983 and came down in 1985. It returned in 1986 and dropped out again in 1991. Three years after that, the original club merged, and those who opposed the merger formed CB 1939 Canarias. It reached LEB Oro in 2007, won that league, and joined the ACB, Spain's top division, in 2012.

The Pabellón Insular Santiago Martín, a hall of 5,100 seats, is where the club's European story took shape. In 2017 it hosted the Basketball Champions League finals, and Tenerife won its first title there in front of its own crowd. It won the competition again in 2022. The FIBA Intercontinental Cup followed in 2017, 2020 and 2023.

The Spanish league has been harder to crack. The club has never won the ACB title. Its best season came in 2020-21, when it finished third in the regular season and reached the semi-finals. In 2023 it reached the Copa del Rey final and lost to Unicaja Málaga.

He was twice named ACB most valuable player and is the club's all-time leading scorer in the league. Two of the club's own academy graduates, Xabier López-Arostegui and Jaime Fernández, also came through to the first team.

All of it grew from a club founded on the island in 1939.
