Tupan

Tupan won the Campeonato Maranhense in 1932, 1935 and 1938, three titles in seven years.

The club has changed shape more than once. Tupan Sport Club dissolved in 1957. A new club took the name Tupan Futebol Clube in 1958, on 23 December, the same date as the original founding in 1926. It became Sociedade Esportiva Tupan in 1978, and the colours changed with it: blue, yellow, green and white gave way to blue, white and red. Professional operations stopped in 1994 because of financial difficulties. The club returned to professional football in 2020.

The nickname comes from the mascot. Supporters call the team "Índio", and the fuller form is "Guerreiro Indígena", the Indigenous Warrior.

Goalkeeper Clemer won the Copa Libertadores and the Intercontinental Cup with Internacional and played for Brazil. Airton Oliveira, known as "Oliverrá", played for Fiorentina and represented Belgium at the 1998 World Cup. Tupan's traditional rivals are Moto Clube and Maranhão Atlético Clube.

The club's official home is the Castelão, the Estádio Governador João Castelo, which holds about 40,000. Its earlier ground, the Estádio Santa Isabel, held around 5,000. In the Segunda Divisão, Tupan has played at smaller grounds such as the Estádio Frei Epifânio. In 2023 the team finished third and reached the semifinals.
