Venda Nova

Until 1948 Venda Nova was not part of Belo Horizonte at all. The district belonged to the municipality of Santa Luzia, and sports enthusiasts there formed their own football club in 1930, eighteen years before the annexation. When the border moved, the club stayed where it was, and the old municipal line kept its meaning on the pitch: the nearest rivals are still sides from Santa Luzia, Santa Luzia Esporte Clube and União Luziense among them. Matches against them are called the Clássico Venda Nova-Santa Luzia.

Locals call the club "Vendinha". The formal nickname is "Calango do Cerrado", the Cerrado Lizard. Home games are played at the Estádio Aldemiro Fernandes Torres, known as "Senhor Miro", a ground of about 5,000 capacity on Rua Irineu Pinto.

The results that carry weight came in two separate settings. In amateur football, Venda Nova won the Copa Itatiaia de Futebol Amador three times, in the 1982/83, 1984/85 and 1986/87 seasons. The club then moved into the professional state pyramid and finished as runner-up in the Campeonato Mineiro Terceira Divisão in 1996. In the 2006 Segunda Divisão it ended 14th. It has not won a professional Campeonato Mineiro title.

Off the pitch, the club runs youth development and community projects in the district, and its women's team is followed by the local portal Venda Nova BH. Supporters use the short form "Senhor Miro" for both him and the stadium.
