On 20 August 2026 José Humberto de Oliveira, known as Zé Humberto, collapsed during a training session and died. Tiago Pereira took over the squad.
Esporte Clube Nova Lavras was created in 2026 to bring professional football back to Lavras, in Minas Gerais, after several years without it. The crest carries two dates. 2026 is the year of the club's creation. 1967 points back to Fabril Esporte Clube, the side from the years when the city last had a professional team.
The colours are blue, red and white, which gives the team the name "Tricolor". The nickname is Leão do Morro, the Lion of the Hill, and the organised supporters call themselves Fúria Tricolor. The president is Dionísio Ananias, known as "Cebolinha". The squad is young, and Álvaro Leão is described as a product of the club's own academy. The team plays at the Estádio Municipal Coronel Juventino Dias, which holds 5,000.
Nova Lavras entered the third tier of Minas Gerais football, the Campeonato Mineiro Segunda Divisão, with promotion to Módulo II as the aim. The debut came on 19 September 2026 against Venda Nova and ended in a 2–1 defeat.
