The Campeonato Mineiro Segunda Divisão operates as the third tier of Minas Gerais state football. Organised by the Federação Mineira de Futebol (FMF), the competition has undergone significant structural changes since its inception. It began in 1986 as the Terceira Divisão before being discontinued after 1990. The tournament was revived in 2009 and officially renamed Segunda Divisão the following year.
The current format involves a group stage where teams are divided into three sections. Qualification for the knockout phase follows a specific criteria: the top two sides from each group join the two best third-placed teams. This structure determines who advances to the quarterfinals. The primary objective for participants is promotion to Módulo II, the state’s second tier. In the 2024 edition, Guarani de Divinópolis and Uberaba secured promotion through this process.
Historically, Mamoré holds the record for most titles with three victories. Other clubs have claimed two championships each, including Araxá, Ateneu, Coimbra, Guarani, and Tombense. Relegation policies have shifted over time. Recent regulations for 2025 suggested no relegation as the competition is viewed as the final professional level in the state pyramid, although conflicting reports from later years indicate potential movement to a fourth-tier division.
The tournament serves as a crucial pathway for lower-ranking clubs within Minas Gerais. Success here allows teams to reach higher levels of state competition and potentially qualify for national lower divisions via the top tier. The competition stands apart from the national Brazilian structure, focusing exclusively on regional development and progression for clubs based in the state.
