Victoria Hotspurs

Victoria, the main town of Gozo, has never been short of football pride packed into a small space. Victoria Hotspurs was founded in December 1948 by Dr Antoine Mercieca, a Tottenham Hotspur supporter, along with Gigi Xuereb and Alfred Attard. The first players trained out of the old Gozo Hospital in St Francis Square and borrowed shirts from the hospital staff, which earned the team its old nickname, L-Ospedaliere.

For decades the club's business was beating Victoria Wanderers and Oratory Youths, the other two sides from the same town, in what is still called the Victoria Derby. Hotspurs won the Gozo First Division thirteen times between 1962 and 2019 and added nine Super Cups along the way.

The club followed him past the island's own boundaries. Relegated to the Gozo Second Division in 2022–23, Hotspurs won it back a year later, then applied to leave the Gozo league system altogether — the first Gozo club to do so — and had the move approved by the Malta Football Association in April 2024. In their first season in the National Amateur League II they won both the league and the National Amateur Cup, earning promotion to the Maltese third tier.
