Swieqi United

That title arrived in 2024-25, decades after a handful of university students in Swieqi decided their municipality needed a team of its own and put an owl on the badge to say so.

The men's side climbed fast once it existed: Second Division football by 2014, then a play-off win over Żabbar St Patrick in 2018 that put Swieqi United in the First Division for the first time. Growth came with a cost. In 2015 goalkeeper Matthew Mulholland said he had been offered a bribe before a match against Żejtun Corinthians, a case that shadowed a club still finding its feet at senior level.

What held steadier was the women's section, launched in 2014 and treated from early on as central rather than peripheral to the club's identity. In 2024 Swieqi United began offering semi-professional contracts to its female players, a step few clubs of its size in Malta had taken, and the trophies followed. Patricia Araujo has kept goal through much of that run.

Youth football gets the same weight. Pembroke Athleta provide the local derby, but it is Abdulai's name that supporters bring up first when asked what Swieqi United has become.
