Attard

Lydon Cuschieri has spent his career at a ground most opponents can barely find on a map. Attard Football Ground has hosted this village side since long before Cuschieri or his teammate Miguel Caruana pulled on the red and black, without much need for a name to hang on the fixture against Senglea Athletic beyond the fact that the two sides keep meeting and keep calling it a derby.

The club that plays there now was founded in 1974, but Attard's footballing memory runs longer than that. A side called Attard United had already worn the village's name between 1935 and 1940. What came after in 1974 was not a revival so much as a fresh start by local enthusiasts who wanted the village represented again, and this time the project has lasted.

Seraċini, as they are known, have made their name in Malta's lower amateur tiers rather than at the top of the pyramid. Two BOV Third Division titles mark the high points, in 1998–99 and in 2019–20, the second of those handed to them after the season was cut short by the COVID-19 pandemic. They have tested themselves higher up, in the Challenge League and the FA Trophy, without breaking through to a major cup or a top-flight title.

No boy from Attard has gone on to a senior Malta cap or a move to one of the island's leading clubs, and the team gets by without an official website, running its affairs through the Malta Football Association's Match Centre and social media instead. It remains, much as it did in 1974, a village club built by people from the village.
