Strebre Delovski took over as chief executive in 2025, and the job he walked into says a good deal about where the club sits. For the new Australian Championship, which the Wolves helped found in its first season, the club moved its home games to the Collegians Sports Centre. WIN Stadium stays the home ground in NPL NSW.

The club was put together in 1980 as Wollongong City, to give the steel city a place in the National Soccer League. The name has changed more often than most: Wollongong Wolves from 1996, then Wollongong FC when the money ran short in 2007, then a not-for-profit rebuild as Wollongong Community FC in 2009, then South Coast Wolves. The old name came back in 2016, at the 35th anniversary.

The two NSL championships are what the town still talks about. The first, in 1999–2000, was followed by a second the season after, and the club went on to win the OFC Club Championship in 2001.

Red and white came from the Illawarra flametree, which grows through the district and turns the hillsides red in early summer. The crest adopted in 2016 carries a wolf's head with two gold and two silver stars.

The club spent its early decades as the outsider in a New South Wales competition run out of Sydney, and the NPL NSW fixtures against the Sydney clubs still carry that.
