Estadio Nemesio Díez

Estadio Nemesio Díez has worn six different names since it opened. Two of them, through the 1950s and 1960s, honoured club presidents; then the ground became Estadio Toluca 70 when it hosted matches at the 1970 World Cup, and picked up the number 86 when the tournament returned to Mexico sixteen years later. The current name arrived in 2000, for Nemesio Díez Riega, the former club owner and president, in the year of his death.

The pitch answers to the altitude: Kikuyu grass. That mattered when Italy played Mexico here in the 1970 quarter-final, and again through the three group games the ground held in 1986.

The larger change came decades later. Between 2015 and 2017, to mark the club's centenary, Deportivo Toluca tore down the old bowl, where a forest of pillars blocked sightlines, and rebuilt around four corner supports instead. A second tier went up along with the Tribuna del Sol stand and a roof over the main stand; the reopening came in a match against Club América, which Toluca won 2-1, and capacity rose past its original mark to 30,000.
