Toluca U21

The under-21 side wears the same colours on the same badge, though it is not a club in its own right — it is the academy team fielded in Liga MX's Sub-21 competition, built around the Apertura and Clausura format and the Liguilla playoffs that shape the senior calendar.

The first team was founded on 12 February 1917, and its home ever since has been Estadio Nemesio Díez, known to everyone in Toluca as La Bombonera. Diablos Rojos is the nickname that travels down to the age-group sides that train under the same badge.

What the U21 side carries is a pipeline with a real track record. Alexis Vega came through the academy and made his debut in 2016 before going on to play for the Mexican national team. José Manuel Abundis made the same journey a generation earlier, debuting in 1992 and becoming one of the names longtime supporters still measure academy prospects against.

None of the club's honours belong to the U21 squad itself; those sit with the first team, which has won the Liga MX title 12 times. But the players in Toluca's Sub-21 setup are working toward the same door Vega and Abundis walked through, on the same grounds, under the same red.
