El Barrial does not look like the venue you would expect for a club with Monterrey's name attached to it. The pitch sits inside the Centro de Entrenamiento BBVA, the training complex that feeds the first team, and it holds 570 people rather than the tens of thousands who fill Estadio BBVA across the city. That gap says something about who the fixtures are for: not a paying crowd, but scouts, coaches and the small circle of families who follow the academy sides week to week.

Monterrey U21 plays under that name in the Liga MX U21, the competition still known to many by its old title, Liga MX Sub-20, and the team carries the Rayados nickname and colours straight down from the senior side — white shirt, blue sleeves, blue shorts. The 2025/2026 campaign was only the side's second in this particular category, a detail that points to a fairly recent reshuffle of how Monterrey structures its youth football rather than a long-standing entry in the competition.

The closest the team has come to a title was in the Guard1anes 2020 season, when it topped the regular phase and went into the playoffs as the form side. Atlas U20 ended the run in the semi-final on away goals, and no championship has followed since. It is a modest line in a competition built for development rather than silverware, which is really the point of a team that trains and plays a short walk from where its own graduates eventually make the step up.

For now the fixtures stay where they started, on the small ground at El Barrial, in front of the few hundred who fit inside it.
