Diego Fernando Abreu Firenze

The move that took Diego Abreu to Club Tijuana in January 2026 came with a detail no other transfer that window carried: the head coach at Xolos is his father, Sebastián Abreu . The forward signed a contract running to 31 December 2030, with the fee undisclosed.

He was born in Mexico City but learned the game in Uruguay, at Rincón del Carrasco and Carrasco Polo , before joining the Defensor Sporting academy in Montevideo in 2019/20. His first professional contract followed in February 2021, a three-year deal. Then came the slow part. From 2021 to 2023 he played for the reserve and youth sides, and his first appearance for the senior team was a friendly on 14 January 2023.

At Botafogo in 2023 he was placed in the Sub-20 setup, where he played once and scored once; he made no first-team appearances. In January 2024 he went to Deportivo Toluca for the Clausura and finished the tournament without a single competitive minute for the senior side. Across his time at Defensor Sporting, including the Uruguayan Cup, he made roughly 30 appearances and scored seven or eight goals.

His international record runs through Mexico at under-17, under-18 and under-20 level, and he has been called into Uruguay's under-20 squad since 2021. In April 2026 he said publicly that he wants to debut for the senior Mexico side, arguing that his style of play suits that team better. He has not yet played for either senior national team.
