About the player
Givanildo Vieira de Souza made his debut for Vitória at sixteen before leaving Brazil altogether, spending several seasons in Japan with Kawasaki Frontale and loan spells at Consadole Sapporo and Tokyo Verdy.
The move to FC Porto in 2008 turned him into one of the most feared forwards in Portuguese football: three league titles, two domestic cups and a Europa League triumph, capped by finishing as the competition's top scorer in 2010–11. Zenit Saint Petersburg paid €60 million for him in 2012, and he repaid it with two Russian league titles, a cup and a run as the division's top scorer and best player in 2014–15. A subsequent switch to Shanghai SIPG for what was then an Asian transfer record, including a Chinese Super League title.
Hulk finally returned home in 2021, joining Atlético Mineiro on a free transfer, and the homecoming was anything but sentimental decoration — he won the Brazilian championship, the Copa do Brasil and the Copa Libertadores in the same year, later adding a Recopa Sudamericana and several Campeonato Mineiro titles, and became the club's seventh-highest scorer in its history. With Brazil, he was part of the squad that won the Confederations Cup in 2013 and took Olympic silver at London 2012. In May 2026 he moved on again, joining Fluminense on a free contract.
