About the player
On loan at C.D. Mafra in the Portuguese second tier, he made such an impression in 13 appearances, scoring once, that Midtjylland cut the loan short in January 2023 and sold him outright to Sporting for a reported €7.5 million, a fee that could rise to €12.5 million with add-ons. Midtjylland kept a 20% sell-on clause.
His path into the game began far from Denmark. Diomande joined Olympic Sport Abobo in Ivory Coast at the age of ten in 2014, before moving to Midtjylland's academy in January 2020. He never made a senior appearance for the Danish club.
He won the Primeira Liga in both the 2023–24 and 2024–25 seasons , adding the Taça de Portugal in 2024–25, and was named to the league's Team of the Year in both title-winning campaigns. He was also voted Defender of the Month in September 2023 and again in January 2025.
With Ivory Coast, Diomande was part of the squad that won the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, played in early 2024. He featured in the group stage against Guinea-Bissau and started against Nigeria, conceding a penalty to Victor Osimhen in that match.
