Ferencváros's women's handball side has been the standard-bearer in Hungary for decades, and 2024 kept that run alive with another domestic double. The men's team, meanwhile, sits in a different reality: promoted back to the top flight in 2017 after a spell in the second division, still chasing the kind of silverware that hasn't come its way since the 1960s.

That gap between the two departments defines the club's handball identity. The women's team's honours list runs to fourteen Hungarian championships and sixteen domestic cups, and it has reached beyond Hungary three times to lift the EHF Cup Winners' Cup, beating Viborg HK in the 2012 final after doing the same to SC Leipzig back in 1978. In 2023 the team went further than ever in Europe's top competition, reaching the Champions League Final Four before losing the final to Vipers Kristiansand, 28–24.

The men's department has had a harder road. A single national title from 1956, shared and awarded only after the fact, remains its high point; relegation to the NB I/B in 2013 cost the side several seasons before it clawed its way back up. Telekom Veszprém is the name that matters most on that side of the club's fixture list, while the women's team measures itself against Győri Audi ETO KC, home and away, in Hungary and in Europe alike.

Both teams now play out of the Elek Gyula Aréna, a 1,300-seat hall renamed in 2012 for the coach who once shaped the club's game, a step up from the "Wooden House" that housed the men's side generations earlier.

Ask who Ferencváros handball has produced and the women's list runs deep, but few careers there sum up the club's current ambition like Laura Glauser's. Signed as a French international goalkeeper, she has become the last line for a side still measuring itself against Europe's best rather than just Hungary's.
