The nearest MOL Tatabánya KC came to a European trophy was in the spring of 2026, when a run to the final of the EHF European League ended against RK Ohrid. Domestically, the club's four Hungarian League titles all came inside a single decade, in 1974, 1978, 1979 and 1984, and the two Hungarian Cups, in 1969 and 1977, carry their own weight.

The team grew out of the mines. It started in 1942 as the handball section of the Tatabányai Bányász Sport Club, drawing its players from the town's coal-mining workforce, and the nickname Bányász, Miner, has stuck ever since. When the mines were privatised in the early 1990s and the money that had kept the section running dried up, handball broke away from the parent club to stand on its own as Tatabánya KC. The split did not immediately settle the finances: between 1996 and 1998 the club merged with local rival Tata, playing as Tatabánya-Tatai Cserép KC to spread the costs, before splitting off again once it could stand alone.

Matches against Ferencváros still carry the most weight in the domestic calendar, ahead of the fixtures with Veszprém and Szeged. The club plays out of the Tatabánya Multifunctional Sports Hall, in front of 6,200 seats, in blue and white.

Márton Székely wears the captain's armband now, but it is László Marosi's decade at the club, from 1981 to 1990, that older supporters still measure the team's mining-era identity against.
