Bala Town secured a comfortable 3-0 victory over Gresford Athletic in the Welsh Championship on Friday evening. The result came in the North division, fourth stage of the competition, played at Bala's home ground. The hosts took all three points to strengthen their position near the top of the table.
By then, the standings told the story before a ball was kicked. Bala Town sat fifth with 12 points from five matches — four wins and a single defeat. Gresford Athletic languished in 16th place with zero points from five games, losing every outing so far this season.
The recent form of both sides offered little surprise. Bala had won their last two league fixtures, beating Ruthin Town 2-1 and Bangor 1876 2-1 before that. Gresford, meanwhile, had failed to score in their last three league games, suffering heavy defeats against Bricketfield Rangers, Caersws and Newtown.
And here's the thing — this kind of result changes very little in the table. Bala remain fifth, though they are closing on the teams above them. Gresford stay bottom, or near the bottom, of a division where five losses in five games is a difficult position to recover from.
The 12-point gap between the two sides reflects the current reality of their campaigns. Bala have shown they can string wins together, even if they lost 4-0 to Colwyn Bay earlier in the season. Gresford have yet to find a winning formula, or even a point, in what has been a challenging start.
