Maraton Thump Red Star 5:0 in Apertura Six
Maraton put six goals past Red Star in the Apertura round six clash on Saturday evening. The hosts finished with a 5:0 victory at their ground in the National League. It extended their unbeaten run to six games across the competition.
N. Messiniti opened the scoring at the 10th minute and added another before half-time at 37. J. A. Arriaga Chavez went close to a hat-trick with a goal at 45 plus three minutes. I. Castillo made it four at 52 and sealed the result with an 82nd-minute strike.
Red Star came out for the second half with six changes all at once, which said something about how they were coping. J. Padilla picked up a yellow card at 69 minutes as they tried to find a way back. The visitors never really threatened to score despite having more attacks in total.
To be fair, the statistics show Red Star had more attacking moves and corners, but they couldn't get shots on target. Maraton kept 52 per cent possession and hit the frame five times while the visitors managed only four. The difference between the two sides was in efficiency, not volume.
The result keeps Maraton top of the table with 14 points from six games — four wins and two draws. Red Star sit fourth with eight points, two wins, two draws and two losses. The gap between them is now six points in the standings.
And here's the thing about a scoreline like that — it doesn't always tell you the full story of a match. But on this occasion, five goals in 90 minutes against a side that had more attacks is a clear message. Maraton are building something that could trouble everyone down the road.
