Match report

Ceará and Sport Recife met at Estádio Castelão on Friday evening for the twenty-sixth round of Brazil's Serie B, and the hosts edged a 2:1 victory after a tense finish. The match had looked destined for a draw until Marlon Douglas struck in the ninety-fifth minute, sending the home crowd into raptures. By then, both sides had already thrown everything at the game.

Sport Recife controlled the tempo early on, keeping 60 per cent of possession and probing with more attacks — ninety-five to Ceará's eighty-six. But control does not always translate into clarity. The visitors created fewer big chances, just one compared to the hosts' three, and their shots lacked the precision that separates good from great. Ceará, by contrast, were ruthless when opportunities arrived.

Enzo Valentim Lodovico thought he had given Sport Recife the lead in the sixty-first minute, only to see his effort cancelled by VAR. The decision shifted something in the room, though neither side immediately capitalised. Luiz Otávio finally broke the deadlock for Ceará in the seventy-third, and the match opened up again. Melquisedeque Costa De Oliveira restored parity for the visitors eight minutes later, and the game was alive once more.

The late drama belonged to Ceará. Douglas finished what had been a growing sense of urgency, capitalising on a moment of space that neither defence could quite close down. The away side had pushed for an equaliser until the final whistle, but their shots — five on target against four — could not find the net at the crucial moment. Ceará's expected goals figure of 1.75 told the deeper story of their efficiency.

The statistics paint a picture of two very different approaches. Sport Recife made 446 passes to Ceará's 291, dominated the opposition half with 257 passes, and attempted more long passes and crosses. Yet their shot accuracy sat at 24 per cent, while the hosts managed 27 per cent with far fewer attempts. The difference between one goal and two often comes down to those margins.

For Ceará, who sit sixteenth with twenty-six points, the result ends a difficult run — they had lost two of their last three games, including a heavy 2:0 defeat to Vila Nova. Sport Recife remain ninth with thirty-eight points, but this was a chance to close the gap on the teams above them. The table does not change dramatically, but the feeling in the stadium did.
