Étoile Carouge beat Rapperswil-Jona 2:1 in the Challenge League's fifth round on Thursday evening. The result keeps the hosts in sixth place with eight points from five matches, while Rapperswil-Jona remain ninth on three. It was a game decided by three goals rather than sustained pressure, and by then the visitors had already shown they could not respond when needed.
S. Diarrassouba opened the scoring in the 26th minute, giving Étoile Carouge the lead they would not relinquish. L. Essiena doubled the advantage in the 41st, and T. Escorza added a third for Rapperswil-Jona in the 60th before the visitors' hopes were extinguished. To be fair, Rapperswil-Jona created very little after that, and the hosts were not asked to defend much.
Étoile Carouge controlled the tempo without dominating possession in a way that would suggest total superiority. They held 57 per cent of the ball and completed 411 passes compared to Rapperswil-Jona's 291, but the real difference was in the final third. The hosts registered 147 passes into the opposition half against 71, and they created three big chances while their opponents created none.
Shooting accuracy tells the fuller story. Étoile Carouge managed five shots on target from 15 attempts, while Rapperswil-Jona hit the frame just twice from ten efforts. The hosts blocked seven shots and made 29 clearances, but they also completed 11 successful dribbles and six crosses, showing they could work the ball into dangerous areas. By then, Rapperswil-Jona had only three goalkeeper saves to make.
Substitutions came in clusters. Étoile Carouge brought on E. Senaya and O. Correia in the 61st and 69th minutes, while Rapperswil-Jona responded with D. Muzzi and Y. Ryter in the 73rd. Both sides made further changes in the final quarter, but the game was already settled. Aerial duels were evenly matched at 19 apiece, and neither side received a card.
The result leaves Étoile Carouge two points ahead of Rapperswil-Jona in the standings, with both teams having played the same number of matches. The hosts' recent form included a win against Collé-Boschi and a draw with Everdon Sport, while Rapperswil-Jona's last outing was a 2-0 defeat to Winterthur. The gap between them is small, but the quality of their performances so far tells a different story.
