Cherkas: Avangard Show No Real Game This Season
Ex-SKA coach Sergei Cherkas says Avangard look heavy and sluggish despite sitting seventh in the East with 8 points from 8 KHL games.
Sergei Cherkas, the former SKA head coach, says Avangard have shown almost nothing in the way of a coherent game in the early weeks of the KHL season.
"Avangard aren't just failing to click, they're surprising everyone in a negative way, to be honest. Yes, the team has injuries, but even the players taking the ice right now aren't showing anything in terms of movement. There simply is no game from Avangard. Even the last match against Spartak showed that. The Moscow side were better, created more chances, combined more interestingly, but Avangard still pulled the game out. All the same, the team looks heavy, cumbersome. There is very little good hockey on show," said Cherkas.
Omsk have taken 8 points from 8 games and sit seventh in the Eastern Conference table. In their most recent outing, against Spartak, Avangard came away with the win despite being second-best for long stretches.
If the movement problems Cherkas describes persist, Avangard risk sliding further down a conference table where they already have little room to spare.
