The current club was registered on 19 January 2007, but it does not claim to start there. It traces itself back to Kaufmännischer Sportklub Klagenfurt, founded on 1 June 1920, renamed Sportklub Austria Klagenfurt in 1927, folded into FC Kärnten after the 1997 merger, and left without a home when FC Kärnten dissolved in 2009. Registering the name again was one thing; Austria Klagenfurt only returned to competitive football in 2010, taking over the league place of SC St. Stefan/Lavanttal, a club that had stepped aside for financial reasons.

Twice, in 2020/21 and 2022/23, it reached the Austrian Cup quarter-finals. That run ended in 2024/25 with relegation back to the 2. Liga.

Home matches are played at the Wörthersee Stadion, built for Euro 2008 with a capacity of 32,000 and later scaled back to 18,000 for league football; since 2022 it has carried the sponsored name 28 Black Arena.
